Eco-update Summer 2006Hi to everyone, ![]() It has been a very productive year a plentiful yield of fruit (one grape vine gave more than 50 kg. of tasty organic grapes) and vegetables (lots of cherry tomatoes, luckily the kids from the kibbutz helped to pick them). We had lots of visitors, workshops and of course mud, mud, mud. We were very proud to be awarded the 2006 Award for Ecovillage Excellence by the Global Ecovillage Network. Alex went to the General Assembly meeting at the eco village Svanholm in Denmark to participate and receive the prize. The first stage of the eco tea house and information center has been finished. There are also new composting toilets, a constructed wetland for purifying the wastewater on site, solar electricity panels and water heater. We are left with a few things to finish off, adding our special touch. There will be books and information pamphlets together with the tea and solar cooked cakes very soon. The Green Apprenticeship “our 10 week work/study practical ecology course” has also been improved. Its also now incorporates the “72 hour certified permaculture design certificate” and now the Ecovillage Design Education curriculum which is an official contribution to the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. This is an exciting addition to our diverse course, linking together ecology, kibbutz, and Israel into an amazing experience. Straw Bale construction in Israel got a big push in mid July when we successfully had a mud plastered straw bale wall go the distance in the official fire test. The wall stood up to 3 hours of constant heat reaching temperatures of over a 1000 degrees Celsius. This will help us with planning permission for future projects. We celebrated after with a falafel and mango juice. That’s all for now, looking forward to a quiet and constructive winter, take care. yours Mike K. » Click here to view our latest eco-update gallery Contact Lotan Center for Creative EcologyLeah Zigmond |
